Sir Alex Ferguson, that mercurial football manager of one of the greatest football teams of our day and age, finally retires from the managerial/coaching job from Manchester United FC. I never liked man u for one thing only, that they were a great rivalry to another great team in england, Arsenal FC of london. Yes, I have been a gunner since 1996, even before they won the double in 1998, Arsene Wenger’s first year in charge. Since all matches between two teams has been highly expected from both fans of the divide until Chelsea and Manchester City came along to spoil the fun with Tottenham Hotspurs. Some matches were quite painful to me, like the 6-1 drubbing of Arsenal at old tradford, the stadium of dreams in 2001 or there about!!! And the 8-2 demolition of arsenal last season at the same venue. We have also had our good times too.
But it’s all about Alex Ferguson. That man is an enigma. He has been there since 1986. But he stated his football playing career with Queens Park Rangers in 1957, and ended his football career with Ayr United in scotland in 1974. He first coached East Stirlingshire, St.Mirren, Aberdeen and Scotland before joining Manchester United in 1986. His coaching career has spanned from 1974 till late. That is 39 years. He was born in December 31, 1941. He is the longest serving manager in the EPL. He is only the third british manager to win the UEFA Champions League/Cup twice. The man has achieved many things including winning the league 20 times.
But Ferguson never had it smooth with Man U. His first three season were tough, it was even thought he could get sacked, but he won the FA Cup in his third year and the UEFA Cup by beating Barcelona 2-1. He finally won the EPL in it’s first season after buying the legendary Manchester United player, french born Eric Cantona. Since then great players like Ryan Giggs, Van Nistelroy, David Beckham, Christiano Ronaldo and now Robin Van Persie (our player o!) Have come and gone.
But what I will never forget was the night Manchester United won the UEFA Champions League for the first time, I couldn’t watch the match live but listened to it on BBC Radio with my late dad. That was in 1998 and I was young man seeking to gain get admitted into a nigerian university then but that night was something else. It was played in Camp Nou, Barcelona, between Bayern Munich and Manchester United. Bayern scored with a free kick. Then two late goals by Teddy Sheringham, in the three minutes of added time, Ole Gunnar Solsjaer (baby face killer) in the extra time, won the game for Manchester United. That was when they won the treble. (Wait, I did watch that match I think). Even the queen said that england wouldn’t win it again, but liverpool, man u and cheslea and made England win it four times now since it changed it’s name to the UEFA Champions League. That was a memorable night and that was only when I supported Man U. No wonder Bayern Munich hates the gusts of English teams. Man U denied them the cup and the later won it in 2000. Chelsea beat them last year in their own backyard now they have qualified for the final this year.
I duff my hat to you sir! What you did was great and you have made yourself the greatest manager in England for all times. It would feel kind of lukewarm to see somebody else take over the club and sit down in his sit when man u plays at home. Me thinks is Maurinho but both men are two world apart and you can see that in the teams the coached and their coaching careers. LONG LIVE THE KING OF MANCHESTER!!!!!! (I am an arsenal fan please!!!)
